Fly-tipper fined hundreds as part of ‘name and shame’ blitz

-

A WIGAN man has been fined almost £800 for flytipping in Southport.

Ben Molyneux, 41, was caught illegally disposing of rubbish at Ainsdale Discovery Centre.

Molyneux, of Norfolk Street, was fined a total of £763.40 at South Sefton Magistrates Court on January 17.

The prosecution comes as Sefton Council launches a ‘ name and shame’ blitz in a bid to warn potential offenders against flytipping.

Mr Molyneux pleaded guilty to the charges and Sefton magistrates fined him £120 plus a £30 victim surcharge and costs of £613.40.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, cabinet member for regulatory, compliance and corporate services, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to successfully prosecute this individual for flytipping.

“Unfortunately, many people believe that they can dispose of rubbish wherever they want causing issues for residents and draining Council services.

“Hopefully this case will act as a deterrent to other potential offenders.”

It is estimated during the 2015/16 financial year, Sefton Council spent almost £400,000 in relation to the clearance, disposal and enforcement of flytipping offences.

Anyone with concerns regarding flytipping, or who wishes to report an offence, they should contact Sefton Council on 0345 140 0845 or report it online.
