ASOUTHPORT gymnastics club is hosting a week of sponsored bounce events in aid of Bertie’s Buccaneers.
Gymnastics and Tumbling, based at Birkdale High School, is hosting 10 minutes sponsored Bounce for Bertie sessions in all its classes this week to help raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Bertie’s Buccaneers was set up by the family of Southport child Bertie Kay, who suffers from an Ullrichs CMD, an ultra rare from of muscular dystrophy.
It originally started fundraising to help pay for a specially made trike to help Bertie be more independent and to be able to join in with his friends.
Having managed to achieve that, it now continues to raise money for the national charity which is researching how to tackle the disease.
Gymnastics and Tumbling is run by British Gymnastics trained coach Ricky Brooks and aims to give people the chance to experience the fun of gym- nastics, with a special focus on skills such as rolls, cartwheels, flicks and somersaults.
Bertie’s brother and sister, Archie and Emmeline, attend the the club and it is now offering a unique way to support the cause.
A spokesman for the club said it was asking all of its members to support Bertie’s Buccaneers in their quest to raise awareness and vital funds for research into a cure for muscular dystrophy.
‘‘Bertie is from Southport and d has a brother and sister who enjoy classes at Gymnastics andd Tumbling each week.
“During classes from Januaryy 23-28 we will host a sponsored d Bounce for Bertie where all of f our members will spend 10 minutes of their session bouncing in various gymnastics shapes along our 15m air-tracks.
“I would like to encourage alll of our members to be sponsored for the event so that we can add to the £317 raised in 2016 through the donation of photograph sale commission.”
