MARSTON’S Inns are set to build a new ‘food pub’ in Kew after being given the go-ahead by Sefton Council.

The company submitted an application for the pub, to be built on the land behind McDonald’s and Tesco, last September.

The plans have now been approved, with the council ruling that it would provide a positive development for the area.

The new building will include car parking facilities with 70 spaces and an outdoor children’s play area. Under the terms of the council’s ruling, it will be allowed to open 7am12.30am Sunday to Thursday and 7am to 1.30am Friday-Saturday.

The original planning documents stated: “The proposed development will be a food-led operation, although it will constitute a fully licensed public house.

“Marston’s is one of the country’s leading pub operators. The company owns and/or operates a wide range of some 1,700 public houses and pub/restaurants on a national basis.

“The food-led pubs are aimed at business people, the more mature diner, and families (as indicated by the outdoor play area proposed as part of this application)”.

Lib Dem councillor David Pullin, who represents the Kew Ward, welcomed the news as a boost for the town.

He said: “I very much welcome Marston’s continued investment in Southport.

“Not only will the new pub and restaurant provide more jobs in this area it will also enhance the gateway into Southport.

“Like the Guelder Rose on the sea front that enhanced the town’s offer to visitors and residents, I very much expect this new inn will do the same and will popular with families of all shapes and sizes.”

The company opened one of its food pubs in Skelmersdale in 2016 and has plans to open a further 150 new sites this year. It’s ‘New Build Programme’ will see the company invest £80m, creating more than 5,000 jobs.

The chain runs a variety of pubs across the country, including specialist carveries and rotisserie pubs offering slow cooked chicken. It also runs traditional food pubs with ‘old fashioned pub grub’, and ‘Two for One’ restaurants offering buy one get one free meals all day every day.
