Speeding driver in 16-mile chase with burst tyres

-

A COCAINE-FUELLED man accused of attempting to abduct a 15-year-old girl led police on a frenzied 16-mile chase – even after his van tyres were burst.

Robert Case pleaded not guilty to attempted abduction at Liverpool Crown Court but admitted dangerous driving after being chased from Litherland to Southport.

Police officers had to deploy three ‘stop-stick’ tyre bursting devices before the 35-year-old was finally brought to a halt on October 23 last year.

Case, of no fixed address but from Huyton, also denied attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to a police officer during the incident.

Charles Lander, prosecuting, said the chase began after officers approached the defendant’s Vauxhall Combo van on Field Lane, Litherland.

He said: “He drove off at speed down Field Lane towards Hatton Hill Road, reaching speeds of 50mph in what is a quiet residential area.

“He headed onto Formby Bypass where he was observed overtaking on the wrong side of the single carriageway.

“He was heading north on the southbound side causing other vehicles to swerve out of the way to avoid a collision.”

The court heard he was arrested at the scene and later tested positive for cocaine.

He had already been jailed for six weeks in Sefton Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to drug-driving, the court heard.

Kevin Iro, defending, said his client had been operating a painting and decorating business with his partner when his partner emigrated to Spain – leaving him struggling to cope.

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones adjourned sentencing until the conclusion of a trial for the other matters, which is due to take place in April.
