Jeromes hold on to detune the E Street Band

IN the Handicap League of the Southport and Formby Quiz League, two matches were won by only one point this week with three others very close also.

Receiving 11 and led by John Hoyle 11, St Jeromes started the last round five ahead and managed to hold on to defeat E Street Band 39-38 with Dave Nickeas 14 and Alan Wright 11 leading for the visitors. Conceding 21 and losing the fifth round, it looked all up for Wings at Quads but they won the sixth 9-0 and the final rounds also to finish 53-52 ahead with Dag Griffiths 18, Tom Farley 16 and Bob Parry 10 all scoring well and Richard Farbon 13 leading the reply. Receiving 12 points at Devonshire Club, ExPats remained ahead throughout and finished at 41-39 ahead.

Leo Tobin 12 led for the visitors and Ian Jackson 14 and Dave Leyland 10 for Devonshire.

Conceding 13 at home to Formby Pavilion, Zetland drew level after 7 rounds but lost the last 6-4 to finish 44-42 down. Derek Ainsworth and Harry Owen, both 13, and Paul Edwards 11 scored well for Zetland and Margaret Coppleston­e a fine 15 for the visitors.

Receiving 10, Vikings seemed to be heading for victory against Formby Sports but the latter won the seventh round 9-2 to snatch the win at 43-30. Sheila Tickle 15, Bill Hodgson 11 and Gary Buxton 10 led for the Formby side and Roy Shannon 11 for Vikings. Receiving seven and led by Ann Evans 15, MPs led throughout against Southport FC to finish 38-32 ahead with Geoff Wilde 12 and Mick Hopkins 10 leading the reply.

Led by Nick Philpott 13 and Chris Wood 10, Exams made light of their one point concession to Ainsdale Sands to finish 39-28 ahead. Receiving seven points from Casablanca, Fishermen’s Rest were no match for the home side in going down 51-35 with Ray Oakes 25 and Dave Dutton 10 leading for the Formby side.
