Wings flying but they struggle to take off for second half

- BY TOM FARLEY

IN the Handicap League of the Southport and Formby Quiz League, the variability of quizzes and sometimes the two halves of a quiz was well illustrated in the clash between the champions of the first and second divisions, Wings and Fishermen’s Rest.

Conceding 19, Wings easily won the first half to go two ahead but a very different second half suited the home side much better and they won it by 3 to finish 56-55 in front.

Tom Farley 16, Dag Griffiths 15, Maurice Wright 14 and Keith Mulhearn 10 scored well for Wings and Dave Tarr 14, Dave Williams 12 and Phil Lally 11 for the Fish. Vikings made the most of their 7 point start to finish 50-48 of Devonshire Club despite a strong finish by the home side with Roy Shannon 14 and Kate Woods 12 leading for the visitors and Ian Jackson 15, Dave Leyland 14 and Brian Cummins 13 for Devonshire.

A fine 14 from Ann Evans added to an 18 point start led MPs to a comfortable 60-41 victory at Zetland with Paul Edwards 14, Dick Davies 11 and Harry Owen 10 leading for Zetland. Receiving 4, Exams led for seven rounds against E Street Band but the visitors won the last round by 4 to come home 37-35 winners with Alan Wright 11 and Geoff Hedley 10 leading for the visitors and Steve James 12 and Nick Philpott 10 for Exams.

Conceding 9, Casablanca were fairly comfortable in their 47-36 victory over Quads led by Ray Oakes 16, Bill Thomas 13 and Chris Sumner 10 and Richard Farbon 14 leading the reply.

Conceding 15 and led by Sheila Tickle 26 and Keith Gowans 13, Formby Sports were much too strong for ExPats in winning 51-36.
