Southport Visiter

It’s Open season at Pontins

ONE of Southport’s worst-rated places to stay is clearly making the most of the hotel demand for this year’s Open Championship.

Pontins is charging an eye-popping £1,863 for a family for seven nights while the tournament is on ( July 16-23).

The holiday camp, which is the second lowest rated of Southport’s trading hotels on the website Tripadvisor, is one of the only places to stay showing availability on hotel booking site LateRooms.

To date, Ainsdale Pontins has 3,719 reviews posted on Tripadvisor.

Of these, 1,745 brand the camp “terrible” and 418 say it is “poor”.

Pictures on the review site show dirty mattresses, mould and damp, fixtures held together with duct tape, rubbish strewn about and more.

In June of last year, a disgusted grandmother contacted The Visiter after booking a trip to Pontins for her family and being met with “filthy conditions” and a chalet covered with mould.

Pontins staff declined to comment.

But Visiter readers have had their say online.

Paul Sweeney said: “I’d rather pitch a tent for the week.”

Alison O’Thy simply asked: “Is that where Don- ald Trump will stay if he comes?”

What do you think about the prices for The Open? Would you stay here?
