Hughes ahead of the recurve once again

-

SOUTHPORT archer Heather Hughes overcame concerns about new equipment to shoot for more glory in the latest competition of the indoor season.

North Meols archers hosted the tournament at its indoor venue of the Banks Leisure Centre near Southport on Sunday, March 19.

Competing in the junior ladies recurve category, Hughes shot in the afternoon session.

Still getting used to a new bow set-up, she was soon well ahead of all the junior ladies and went on to beat her nearest rival by more than 100 points.

She also beat the senior ladies winning recurve score by 17 points.

An incredible outcome considering she is still accustoming herself to her new equipment.

The small but very popular competition was held over two sessions, attracting archers from as far afield as Lancaster and Chester.

As always, tournament organisers Kate and Jeff Beatie did a sterling job in ensuring the day ran smoothly, and that all archers enjoyed the shoot.

Shooting in the afternoon session, Skelmersdale’s Jack Grogan soon edged ahead of his competitors in the morning session and those shooting against him in the later session.

This lead continued throughout and ensured Grogan was the winner of the gents recurve trophy for the fifth time in succession.

Both Heather and Jack have recently been sponsored by Merlin archery supplies based in Durham and Leicester.
