Footy plans still on cards

SEFTON Council has said it remains committed to building two five-a-side football pitches outside Splash World in Southport – a year and a half after the plans were approved.

Planning permission was granted to build four artficial pitches on the main car park in 2015, but construction work has yet to begin.

Despite the lack of progress, the council says plans for the facility are still in motion.

The pitches are to be built at the front of the car park, with the coach parking being relocated to the overfill parking area at the Eco Centre to the rear of the building.

3G pitches have become increasingly popular around the country in recent years because the artificial surface is not affected by rain or cold weather.

The construction of a pitch in Ainsdale was met with anger by nearby residents, while a similar proposal in Burscough has received objections from the parish council.

However, as this facility would be beside the Morrisons superstore, Victoria Park and Pleasureland, the proposals may be significantly more straightforward.

A spokesman said: “Planning approval for the sports pitches at Dunes has been granted and the scheme was put out to tender. Our intention is still to go ahead with the new pitches and a further report on this exciting project will go to cabinet in the coming months.

“The improvement works demonstrate our commitment to improving public health right across the borough, even during the current testing times for local government.”
