A team plan has

- BY JIM BOOTH

WE head off straight to Crosby this week where Crosby A clinched the First Division title after not surprisingly beating a very understrength Crosby B side.

With illness and unavailability being the reason, Selwyn Goldthorpe and Sunil Sapre were asked to step up from the 3rd Division into the ‘lion’s den’. To be fair they acquitted themselves very well, facing the likes of Matty Laird, Sylvia Graham and Liam Shaw would be a daunting task.

Although no games were won by the pair, they produced some delightful moments, which even had their opponents applauding, giving much credit to the 3rd Division. In fact the B team got off to a great start, with Sam Pierce winning in three straight over Sylvia, before wins for Matty and Liam, put the champions elect in front 2-1. Matty to do battle with Joe Mul- lin next, and a battle we got, with the first two games shared at, 11-8,7-11, the next two continued in the same vain, all out attack, ferocious hitting, great serving, 8-11,11-5, and we were into the fifth. Matty with a big 5-1 advantage at the turnaround, looked to be cruising, but a great controlled recovery from Joe, won him the game 9-11, making it 2-2. Jack Dempsey restored his side’s lead in overcoming Sam in three games, 11-5, 13-11,13-11, close call there Jack. First doubles up next Jack and Matty verse’s Joe and Sam. Top draw encounter this, and the B team pair were out of it very quick, taking the first with some ease 3-11, following up well with a 7-11 advantage.

More calm from the A team in the third, mixing it up now with controlled attack, taking it 11-6, before edging the fourth 12-10, and the fifth beckons.

First one way and then the other, and again the A team snatch it 13-11, great fightback, they lead 4-2.

That was the best it got for the B team, although Joe did get a glimpse of success against Jack, but four more straight wins made the final score 8-2 Crosby B and they are uncatchable on 131pts. Congratulations to them.

Crosby B remain in third place on 97pts, three behind Crosby C who have 100pts, and with two matches left apiece that runners up spot is still undecided.

Holy Trinity A (88pts) look to have cemented fourth place, whilst at the bottom, Argyle B can’t avoid the drop to the 2nd Division, even after finishing
