Kathryn tunes up for Phil date
MERCURY nominated and critically acclaimed folk artist Kathryn Williams makes her Music Room debut in support of her new album – a collaboration with Anthony Kerr one of the world’s top jazz vibraphone players.
The pair have been working on the album, Resonator (released on One Little Indian), and this live version for six years, breathing new life into music from the great American songbook.
This was done to create an album which re-imagines classic jazz standards, including new single Autumn Leaves.
Kathryn and Anthony’s version of the song – previously performed by greats such as Eva Cassidy, Doris Day, Edith Piaf and Frank Sinatra – is hushed and delicate. Her signature vocal tiptoes over lush, rich vibraphones.
Kathryn has to date released 13 studio albums and has written and arranged for a multitude of artists.
She has also been involved in writing retreats and sessions that enable songwriters to share, collaborate and produce ideas as well as learn skills and techniques.
She has tutored at such events alongside Tom McRae, Samantha Parton and Chris Difford, whose own retreats she has attended.
As a result, she has established her own writing residential courses which took place in 2014-16.
She was given a New Writing North commission as poet in residence at Alnwick Garden in 2006.
An audio CD, Words From The Garden, was released in 2007 featuring writings from Kathryn, Nev Clay, Emma McGordon and Anna Woodford, set in a soundscape by Caroline Beck, with music by Kathryn and Nev.
This gig will also see the Liverpoolborn singer perform songs from across her career, including her recent album of Sylvia Plath inspired songs, Hypoxia (produced by Ed Harcourt).
She will perform on Sunday, April 23 at 8pm in the Music Room, on the corner of Myrtle Street and Sugnall Street at the rear of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, with its own entrance in Sugnall St.
