TV COMEDIAN Johnny Vegas called into Southport’s Peaky Blinders for a pint last Friday – and loved the place so much he even took a turn behind the bar.

The comic, star of several TV shows including ITV series Benidorm, is among celebrities who have paid a visit to the popular Lord Street bar and accommodation.

He was enjoying a weekend in Southport along with his family as they stayed the night in rooms at Peaky Blinders.

Peaky Blinders owner Rob Swire said: “He came into the bar and made time for everybody, even pulled a few pints of Guinness himself!

“He is a true man of the people.

“He is welcome back to stay any time he likes.”

Peaky Blinders has attracted a legion of fans since it opened last year.

The bar, part of Southport’s growing Northern Quarter, has become so successful that it is in the process of expanding.

Johnny – real name Michael Pennington – and his family also called into the recently opened Deli Volare in Lord Street for their evening meal.

Owner Onofrio Maimone said: “He in came for dinner with the family, and was staying at Peaky Blinders.

“I am not sure what the occasion was, but his sis- ter booked upon recommendation.”

Johnny, from St Helens, then popped across the road to continue his evening in Punch Tarmey’s, where he was more than happy to stop and chat – as well as pose for pictures – with fans.

The actor and stand-up is famous for his comedic angry rants, surreal humour, and husky voice.

His TV roles have included Al in the ITV Digital adverts, drug dealer Moz in the BBC black comedy Ideal, Geoff Maltby in the ITV comedy series Benidorm and Eric Agnew in BBC sitcom Still Open All Hours.
