The heat is on... resort to host chilli festival
ASPECIAL chilli festival will be held in Southport town centre this summer. The event will feature hot food, dips, sauces and chilli cheese, as well as a chilli eating competition and a specially constructed gin bar.
Southport BID is supporting the free event, which takes place on Saturday, June 17 in the Town Hall Gardens.
The festival will take place from 10am5pm, with the chilli eating contest taking place at 3.30pm.
The brave entrants in the competition must be aged 18+ and be willing to sign a waiver before taking part.
A spokesman for the event said: “Chilli Fest UK and Southport BID bring you Chilli Fest – a brand new festival for Southport.
“With lots of chillis to try and taste, chilli-based products to sample and much more, it will be a red hot event!
“For the brave there will be a ‘Clash of the Titans’ chilli competition that will literally blow your mind!
“With street food and entertainment, it promises to be a brilliant afternoon – and what’s more, it is free admission.”
The event is one of a number of festivals to be held over the coming year. As well as the Southport Festival, headlined by punk poet John Cooper Clarke and taking place next month, there are plenty more on the Southport calendar.
Hugh Evans, Southport BID chairman, said: “Elsewhere in the month, Visit Southport’s Food and Drink Festival on the 3rd and 4th and Remedy’s Gin Festival from the 9th to the 11th will help ensure that June is a great time to celebrate food and drink in Southport.
“In the middle of all this we have the excellent Southport Fashion Weekend organised by the team behind G-Models.
“And all that’s before we get into the events planned for the rest of the summer and autumn.
“Despite greatly looking forward to spring and early summer however, our minds are also very much on next winter.
“Following the news that Sefton Council are bringing back the Christmas markets, we’re developing our own plans for Christmas and we’ll be announcing these in the next couple of weeks.”
