SEFTON Council has been left with a big clean-up job after travellers left behind masses of litter at the former park & ride site in Kew.

Travellers stayed on the site over the Easter weekend, leaving more mess on the disused site, even including a rabbit hutch.

Piles of bin bags were left at the side of the car park, as well as numerous empty cardboard boxes and boxes from the nearby McDonald’s.

The site is also littered with several piles of chopped down trees and a large heap of car tyres which has been dumped behind one of the fences.

Despite efforts to clamp down on travellers illegally staying at such sites, the problem continues to plague Southport, with similar incidents occurring at Tulketh Street, Splash World and the for- mer SchoolSh l forf HearingH i Impaired Children last year.

After the latest incident, Cllr Tony Dawson has called for action to solve the ongoing problem.

The Lib Dem councillor said: “I have a meeting on Friday with the council’s chief legal officer and I intend to address it there.

“I’ve been told that the park & ride is effectively non-monitored so any traveller who knows about it can get on there with impunity.

“We had the problems with Splash World and eventually managed to get a height limited bar in there and the hasn’t been the same problem since.

“The council has tried to get more efficient but each time it’s more than a few days and it’s a problem.

“We’ve got to find some solutions otherwise we’re going to have the same merry-go-round every year.”

Sefton Council was approached for comment.
