that prized top spot.

It looked like that lead would be extended, second double’s pairing Les Dodd and Callum were in control at 9-11,11-7, 3-11 against Ned and Dave, until the home pair mustered up a great fightback taking the next two, 11-6, 11-7, surprise surprise it’s 3-3. Still the tension mounted, more so now for the Holy Trinity side, who needed two points from four contests.

Argyle though could still do their C team a big favour by winning the match, and assuring them second place.

Callum kept up that pressure with a fine four game win against Norman, but yet again Dave produced the goods, in an equally fine display versus Les

Lord to make it 4-4 on the night.

This could not have been scripted better, one point needed by the home side, and it’s Bob and Les Dodd to the table, a titanic tussle immediately comes to mind.

What a contest, with mistakes forbidden after the first two games were shared, 7-11,11-3, it turned into a chess like exhibition, 12-10 Bob, 9-11 Les and finally into the fifth, and of cause it was close, 11-9 Bob, and for the first time Holy Trinity lead 5-4, so let the celebrations begin, second place is theirs.

Fabulous evening’s work by the home side in a terrific match throughout, but maybe it could get even better, Ned to tackle his opposite number Nick.

Sadly not, three straight to Nick, but it really doesn’t matter one jot, 5-5 the final score, Congratulations

to Argyle D who finish top on 130pts, and to Holy Trinity C’s second place on 126pts, Argyle C just miss out in third with 125pts.

At the bottom Southport B’s match against North Meols was postponed, meaning that Holy Trinity D have an anxious wait on the outcome.

In Division 3, Argyle G finished with that 100 per cent record intact, 18 straight wins and 155pts, Congratulations to them.

However the Para’s still wait on second place, as Crosby G’s match with Southport D was postponed, so now with two results to come from the Crosby outfit, the waiting game continues.

Skem’s manager admitted they have looked thin in recent games and he hopes to have more available this weekend.

“The lack of depth in the squad on Monday cost us. We only had one substitute on Saturday and that cost us too really,” said Rogers.

“The players were tired and they didn’t have the legs to go the full 90 minutes. They needed a bit of a rest.

“Gilly [Steven Gillespie] was playing with a slight hamstring strain. Josh Dobie has not played for six months and he had to play back-to-back games so he was understandably struggling a lot.

“We just have no squad depth. We have had several players unavailable so we have had to select a lot of youngsters.

“We’ll have a few more available this weekend. We had four players at a competition in Dallas and they will only be back on Thursday so we’ll have to see how they are too.”

With their relegation from the Evo-Stik Northern Premier already confirmed, Skelmersdale have just one game left to play in the league.

They take on Stafford Rangers this Saturday but Rogers admitted he won’t be able to experiment too much as the squad will remain depleted.

He revealed the club are already looking to bring in players for next season though and transfer activity will be rife throughout the summer.

“It’s going to be a test again on Saturday. Most teams are physical sides. There are only a few footballing sides in this league – but we have to be ready for that,” said Rogers.

“It will be another test for the lads but it’s an opportunity to play for their places in the side next season.

“We can’t experiment as we haven’t got a big enough squad. We have nobody else who can play really”.
