Ukip’s job on Brexit ‘only half done’

TERRY Durrance will stand for Ukip in Southport, saying his party’s job is “only half done”.

The party spent years calling for a referendum on whether Britain should remain in Europe.

And members were celebrating last year when the vote was held – with a victory for the Brexit camp leading to Brit- ain beginning negotiations to leave the European Union. Terry Durrance is now calling on people who voted for Brexit to vote for Ukip, saying that “a large Conservative majority could put Brexit in peril”.

He said: “Whilst a lot of people might think that Ukip’s job has been done by forcing a referendum that resulted in a majority vote to leave the EU, that is certainly not the case.

“The Conservatives, who are aiming to make political gain by saying that they need the ‘people’s mandate’ to give them a stronger hand in EU negotiations, are not to be trusted on this issue.

“Don’t forget that Theresa May campaigned to stay in the EU. Now in her ‘cool, calm and collected’ way – designed to win people’s trust – she is saying that ‘Brexit means Brexit’ and she ‘will deliver’.”

He added: “Ukip’s job is only half done. We have to hold the next government to account and ensure that the democratic will of the people is carried out.

“It could even be that a large Conservative majority could put Brexit in peril.

“I refuse to talk about hard or soft Brexit. To me it is either a real Brexit or a fake Brexit.”

THE Conservatives have chosen their candidate to run for parliament in the snap General Election to be held on June 8.

Damien Moore, 37, will stand for election in Southport for the second time, after being defeated by John Pugh in 2015.

The Conservative candidate lost by just 1,300 votes at the last general election, and will undoubtedly be looking to close this gap as the Liberal Democrat MP steps down from parliamentary politics.

Cllr Moore is deputy leader of the Conservative group on Preston City Council and works as a retail manager for Asda.

He said: “I am delighted to have been selected as the candidate for Southport and I would be honoured to represent it, working hard in Westminster to be a strong local voice on the issues that matter to our area.

“Every vote will count in this General Election to help strengthen Theresa May’s negotiating position on Brexit.

“So on June 8, the choice is clear, Theresa
