THREE Southport restaurateurs are taking on a marathon golf challenge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The event will see the group play 72 consecutive holes of golf, clocking up some 20 miles over a period of more than 14 hours.

Taking part in the challenge are Chris Wilson, owner of the Office Bar & Restaurant on Hoghton Street; Rob Smallman, who runs La Tabella in Churchtown; and Paul Lang who now runs Langs on Longton.

Paul’s son Josh is also participating in the challenge, which will take place at Southport Old Links course on June 19.

The event, known as the Peter Wilson Golf Day, is in its second year after being set up in 2016 in memory of Chris’s dad who died from a rare form of cancer.

After leaving Christ the King High School Chris, 41, went on to work alongside his dad for 15 years before moving into the catering industry.

Chris said: “We did it last year for the first time after I lost my dad.

“It just felt right to try and raise some awareness and money for the charity, because it’s a fabulous charity.

“It felt right, with us all being golfers, to do this challenge. There are so many people out there who are affected by all sorts of illness so it’s nice to be able to do our bit in some way.

“Last year we had a lot of volunteers come down and support us, which was fantastic.

“It’s a special day for us, we can remember things as we play, but it’s also a chance to help out a worthy cause. The Macmillan team who came and looked after my dad were magnificent and even though this started out to do with remembering my dad, it’s also more about giving something back.”
