Skem outplayed us says Fleetwood skipper Tom
FLEETWOOD Hesketh CC’s run of good form ended on Saturday with a disappointing defeat against Skelmersdale CC.
Tommy Wareing and his side were in high spirits following an impressive win last weekend but they were unable to make it three victories in a row when struggling side Skem produced a strong performance.
Hesketh started off strongly with the bat as opener Neil Rimmer notched up a half century before Jack Wrigglesworth added 31 runs.
However, a ‘middle order collapse’ put Hesketh on the back foot and Skelmersdale responded with a strong performance to steal a comfortable victory.
“All credit to Skem. They out-played us. I wasn’t happy with our performance with the bat or ball -especially after the way we played the week before,” said Wareing.
“Our batting didn’t set us up well to go into the field.
“We had a good start though as Neil Rimmer batted well.
“We were in a good position and looking to put a big total on the board half-way through the innings but then it went wrong.
“We just seemed to have collapsed in the middle order.
“We need to tighten up with our batting now as we gave our wickets away too easily.
“We can’t do that in this league. On our part it wasn’t good enough.
“We’ve had a few good wins and Skem were struggling before this weekend so that is what makes it even more disappointing.”
Wareing is hoping to see a ‘reaction’ from his side this weekend when they are back in action against Wigan.
Hesketh have been dealt a blow though as bowler Steve Gregory will be forced to sit out through a knee injury which he picked up in last Saturday’s defeat.
Second team star Ryan Thomas will be stepping into his shoes and Wareing is confident his side will have more than enough quality to bounce back.
“I’m just looking for a reaction. We were all disappointed and we came back down to earth with the defeat,” said Wareing.
“Wigan are a good side but we’re looking forward to it and we want to push ourselves against these good opponents.
“Unfortunately, Steve Gregory has picked up a knee injury and that’s a blow as he’s been doing well so far.
“Ryan Thomas is coming up from the second team. He’s handy with the bat and ball and hopefully he can help the lads show a reaction to this weekend and put in a good performance.
“We’re as good as any team on our day so we just need to go out there and get back to playing at our best.”
