ASOUTHPORT resident is set to swim the English Channel next month. Huw Morgans, 35, is planning to take on the feat some time between the dates of July 21-28.

The date of the swim is dependant on weather and tidal conditions.

Swimming the English channel has been a “lifelong ambition” for Huw. He said: “I used to work in Dover and this is something I have wanted to do ever since I looked across the water.

“I believe this is something I can do, I wouldn’t have entered otherwise. But, anything can happen. I have been briefed about all the things that can go wrong, from things with my own body, to the water conditions.”

The 35-year-old, from Ainsdale, is also attempting to raise £3,000 for charity from this attempt and all money raised will be shared between local charity WACA, Cancer Research UK, and BLESMA, as Huw has paid all costs with his own money.

He has already managed to raise over 10 per cent of his target on his fundraising page.

Huw added: “I am very well travelled and I really appreciate the local people, and how some people do a lot for this country and overstretch themselves. If raising money for these charities helps even one of those people I will be so happy.”

The length of the swim is swimmer dependant and can take any time between six to 30 hours.

Huw predicts that it will take him 15 hours to complete the swim, after completing a similar distance swim last week to ensure he qualified.

He said: “I did my 34-kilometre qualification swim last week, which was two laps of Lake Windermere. It took me 11 hours to complete.

“This was the distance I will be swimming and although the conditions are very different, this was very encouraging for me.”

Having decided to do the swim in January, Huw says the support he has received from his family and partner Andrea Waring, 40, has been amazing.

He added: “It isn’t every day someone decides to do this, so they are quite baffled.

“My girlfriend Andrea has been very supportive and patient throughout training.”
