‘Almighty bang’ as car smashed wall

ACAR smashed through a wall outside houses in Crossens after a police chase last Thursday.

One man was taken to Aintree Hospital following the incident in Rufford Road, though it is believed there were three people in the car.

According to neighbours, an ‘‘almighty bang’’ was heard at around 9.20pm when the car came crashing through the wall, sending bricks and a concrete post into two driveways, damaging the door of one house and a car outside the other.

The car also hit a tree, sending a wooden support flying into a car parked further down the road.

Several police cars had been chasing the vehicle, which had come from the Bankfield Lane direction and crashed outside houses directly opposite the CD Berry electronics shop.

One neighbour said it sounded as though a bomb had gone off. The man, who did not want to be named, said: “I was sat watching TV and then you’ve never heard a noise like it in your life. It was like a bomb went off. There were blue lights everywhere, I’ve never seen anything like it.

‘‘The car was caved in, the driver had his leg in the car and face on floor and then they took him across the road to treat him.”

The man’s wife added that the road had previously been a frequent spot for dangerous driving but was made safer by the introduction of speed bumps.

“Before we had them there were accidents non-stop,’’ she said, adding: ‘‘It’s not as bad now but there’s nothing anyone can do to stop something like that.”

Merseyside police have been approached for comment.

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed that one man was taken to hospital following the incident.
