Trinity can’t stop Liverpool

- BY PAUL EDWARDS

AT least half the clubs in the Second Division harbour realistic hopes of promotion but it looks as though leaders Liverpool will take some catching.

Matt Jackson’s team remain unbeaten and notched their seventh win of the season on Saturday when slow bowlers Jared Clein and Peter Kelly spun them to a four-wicket victory over Southport Trinity.

Clein and Kelly’s threewicket hauls dismissed the Rookery side for 132 and Sam Holliday’s 65 then all but sealed a win which was eventually completed for the loss of six wickets.

Second-placed Old Xaverians trail the Aigburth side by 23 points after they prevailed in a bowlerdominated low-scoring game at Alder.

Defending a total of just 105, OX’s were indebted to Alex Ward’s 4-29 and Josh Dilworth’s 3-8 as they swept away the home side’s batting for a mere 69 in 21 overs.

But Maghull’s challenge shows no sign of weakening after their 120-run victory over Caldy at Old Hall Field.

Three home batsmen made fifties in their formidable 298-5 declared and one of the halfcenturions, Liam Crilly, then took 4-36 as the Wirral side were bowled out for 178 in 43.5 overs.

James Davies also had a match to savour at Prescot & Odyssey where his 64 runs and six wickets guided St Helens Town to a 35-run victory.

Craig Woods also did his bit, making 68 not out in St Helens’ 224-4 declared in 51 overs but Shaun Haigh’s courageous 85 showed once again that Competition new boys P&O rarely go down with a fight.

Parkfield Liscard secured their second win of the season thanks to a fine all-round performance from Sadrey Depieza.

The home side’s surprise four-wicket victory over Northop Hall was on the cards once they had dismissed their visitors for 95, Depieza taking 5-22. However Charlie Clubbe (3-39) made it tough for Parkfield Liscard and they were grateful indeed for Depieza’s 28 not out.

In the other match, third-placed Spring View achieved a 101-run victory over Wavertree, Amar Ullah making 92 in 190-8 declared before the bowling of Saif Rehman (4-35) and Marc Birch (3-28) settled matters after tea.
