‘Poor all round’ from Hesketh

- BY EMMA SANDERS

FLEETWOOD Hesketh CC suffered a heavy defeat on Saturday after they produced a hugely disappointing performance against Orrell Red Triangle.

Tommy Wareing admitted his side were “poor all round” and they struggled to compete with a strong Orrell side.

Hesketh’s opponents are challenging for the Liverpool Competition First Division title this season and it showed as they were dominant from the start.

Fleetwood won the toss and chose to bat but they were bowled out for just 115 which meant Orrell were able to bat with ease and they cruised to a nine-wicket victory.

“It was disappointing. There weren’t many positives to take from the game at all really,” said Wareing.

“It was a poor performance all round. We just never really got going and we didn’t deserve to get anything from the game.

“Orrell are a really good side and they’re competing near the top but we should have made a better game of it.

“We are just still a little inconsistent and lightweight at the moment but hopefully we can start to turn that around soon.”

Wareing admitted a poor batting performance meant his side were low on confidence going into the field and his bowlers were always going to be up against it.

“We won the toss and chose to bat because it was a decent pitch so there were no complaints about that,” said Wareing.

“A few people started to get off the board but didn’t build any scores. They did bowl quite well but it was nothing special.

“The batting let us down. When you know it’s a good wicket, it’s even more disappointing. The bowlers couldn’t really do much after that to change things.

“The bowlers don’t have much leeway after a poor batting display and once Orrell got off to a decent start, we struggled. We could have done better in parts but the bowlers couldn’t do too much so the game was pretty much already over.”

Hesketh take on Birkenhead Park on Saturday in their latest league fixture and Wareing admitted it was a game they need to win.

They currently sit mid-table but there isn’t too much between Hesketh and the bottom sides so Wareing doesn’t want to see his side drop down the league.

“We’ve not played them [Birkenhead Park] much in recent years but I know they’ve lost a few players and they look like they’re struggling this season,” said Wareing.

“It’s a game we think we should be winning and we always seem to raise our game at home too so we’ll be confident. We have to perform and we need to get a win. It would r relieve a bit of pressure for us as we’re sat in the middle of the t table and we could move either way.

“We’ve got good availability this week though. I’ll have to make a few decisions regarding the first team but hopefully the players who need to, will improve.”
