THOUSANDS of people turned out for the Birkdale Village Summer Extravaganza at the weekend.

The event took place in Birkdale village on Saturday (August 5) and ran from noon until the early evening.

The family-friendly event was run by local traders from Birkdale village and volunteers.

Liverpool Road was closed during the event, and the closure was stewarded by the Rotary Club of Southport.

One of the organisers of the event said: “This was the fourth year of Birkdale’s Summer Extravaganza, and it followed the same structure as every previous year – because we know it works.

“It was an excellent day and thousands of people came out to visit us.”

Various classic cars and bikes were on display at the event, for visitors to inspect and enjoy.

There was something for all ages, with live musical entertainment provided by Voice Plus, fairground rides and popup food stalls.

The organiser added: “It was a great to see all the children enjoying themselves.

“The weather was fantastic, it has been every year, which allowed people to gather and socialise in the street.”

A wide choice of food and drink was also on offer from various local bars and restaurants, as well as barbecues.

Games, including a tombola, were also available.

There was also the annual pooch parade, where proud owners queued to show off their dogs.

The organiser said: “I would like to thank everyone who made this happen, including out sponsor, Spar.

“We will definitely be returning next year to do it all again, on the first Saturday in August.”
