YOU can’t beat growing up as an ’80s kid. We had toys like Rubix cubes, Cabbage Patch dolls and Star Wars; sweets that you could buy for a penny; movies like Back To The Future, Ghostbusters, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Goonies; and pop stars like Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince.

In Southport we had attractions including a choice of three cinemas in Lord Street, the Fun House and the Helter Skelter at Southport Pleasureland and the magnifi- cent Southport Sea Bathing Lake.

We’ve gone back to the Southport Visiter archives from 1981 and 1982 – when the Southport Visiter came out on a Friday – to bring you these pictures of youngsters in the town smiling for the camera.

We have a lovely photo of a Medieval-themed family enjoying a day out at Rufford Old Hall, a long-standing family attraction which is still thriving today.

We also have a photo of children at St Mary’s RC School in Southport; youngsters in a playgroup at Southport Library; and pupils at Stanley High School in Marshside enjoying a day out in May 1982. Do you recognise any of the teachers or pupils in the picture?

We also have photos of a girl admiring a shire horse at a fair in Southport; talented young musicians showing off their skills at the Crossens May Fair in 1982; and a family dressing up for a Vintage Car Rally on The Promenade.

DO you have any memories of the people in these pictures? Or do you have any photos or memories of life in the 1980s you would like to share with readers?
