Students’ worry as hairdressing course cancelled
SOUTHPORT students have been left devastated after their college course was cancelled just two weeks before the new year begins.
A group of hairdressing students, who completed the NVQ level 2 hairdressing qualification at Southport College last year, were offered places to continue to the level 3 course in September.
But the course has been cancelled due to ‘‘an insufficient number of students”.
The mother of one young woman who was due to undertake the course said: “This is disgraceful.
“(My daughter) was offered and accepted the place in May and thought she was due to attend in September.
“We checked with the college last week and they told us it would probably not be running, but to check back because the course leader was on holiday.
“To find out at this late stage is disgusting. Some of the students have children and have made arrangements for childcare and now the plug has been pulled.
“Instead they have found out so late in the day and now have to fight for a place at another college.”
She added: “I have had other children through the college and been very happy with their progress and they gained superb results but this situation is disgraceful and should not have happened.”
A spokesperson for Southport College said: “The decision to cancel a course is never taken lightly, however the NVQ 3 hairdressing course unfortunately does not have a sufficient number of students to run this September.
“All individuals affected were informed by the college as soon as practically possible following confirmation of the decision earlier this week.
“All those affected have been offered guidance interviews and been given assistance in sourcing places at other local providers or been directed to our apprenticeship team who have a number of local vacancies available for Level 3 hairdressing apprenticeships.
“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during this unfortunately unavoidable situation and would like to reiterate that our guidance team are available to support any students who still require assistance in securing a place for September.”
