ENTRIES for the Mad Dog 10k race will open this Sunday (October 1) and are expected to sell out in the first few hours.

The event has attracted thousands of people to Southport each year and has been voted the The Runners World magazine Best 10k in the UK for the past four years.

The opportunity to run in this year’s race opens at 6pm this Sunday and with only 2,500 places you’d be barking mad to miss it.

The event is staged each year by volunteers the Southport Hesketh Round Table under the command of race director Adrian Shandley.

He said: “We’re expecting to fill all of the spaces in a couple of hours of the tickets going on sale.

“There is a high demand and last year we sold out in 24 hours.”

The race has been running for eight years and every time the day has a dog-related theme.

Adrian said: “Last year the theme was Live and Let Drool, and this time it’s going to be Hairy Potter and the Half Bred Pup.

“But we’ve had a lot of themes, another was The Good the Bad and the Pugly!”

The race will start at Stanley High School on Fleetwood Road, Marshside, and every kilometre there will be a live band playing.

Adrian said: “We’re hoping to book bigger bands this year.

“Everything is bigger and better this time around. Even the goody bag has more things in it.

“It’s crazy because it’s just a 10k race, but everything seems to create a winning formula and people love it.”

And it’s not just for fun either – all of the proceeds on the day will go towards local charities.

Adrian said: “The donations and money will go to local charities and local good causes.

“We like to donate to little places that make a difference, like horse riding schools and youth groups. Anything that supports the local community.”
