CAPTAIN Mary Warren proudly celebrated a massive win at Victoria Park.

Southport hosted rivals Chester who were sitting at the top of the league table before the match.

It was down to the last game of the season, and second-placed Southport were determined to clinch the title, which would make them league winners three years on the run.

Southport’s successful team of four – Terry Dunbar, Don Williamson, Derek Lunt and newcomer Peter Williams – produced a competitive display of croquet.

Every game was tight and closelyfought.

The morning session after 12 games ended with Chester in the lead 6-5, and one drawn clash.

The afternoon began with all four of the Southport players winning their first game, and they needed one of the last four to win.

It was a nervous end as Derek Lunt won his last game, at the last hoop, and the experienced Don Williamson used his experience, and skill to overcome his opponent and go on to win the final hoop.

Southport won the match 10 ½ - 7 ½ and deservedly took the title.

It’s been a mixed season for the club’s other teams.

The weekend handicap team finished in second place just behind Bury Peelers after a wonderful start to the season.

Captain John Haslam, though disappointed, is proud of his players and looks forward to next season’s challenge.

The Short Croquet team lost their last game of the season at Pendle.

Despite losing players to illness they managed to achieve second place in the league, although some distance behind winners Bowden.

Captain Carol Lewis is pleased with the progress of newcomers to the team, and looks forward to a successful run next season.

The advanced B Level team has struggled this season, often unable to field an experienced team and finished the season in the lower half of the table.

Captain Ray Lowe hopes to have more players available for the team next season.

The midweek handicap team also struggled with lots of illness and injuries to experienced players.

Unable to field a regular team, they did however fulfil their fixtures, but finished near the bottom of the league.

Captain Carol Lewis is hopeful next season will bring more newcomers through.

The Level Play Golf Croquet team has one match left against Bowden Bandits who have clinched the title.

Southport is currently sitting fourth in the league, and likely to finish in this position.

Captain Don Williamson is pleased with the performance of many of his players, and has brought newcomers into the team.

This will give them experience and he is hopeful of a higher position next season.
