Powell senses victory

SKELMERSDALE United FC were unable to come away with a cup victory against Mossley on Saturday as they were beaten 3-1.

New manager Dave Powell was encouraged by his side’s performance though and he believes they have already started to make improvements.

Skelmersdale are still searching for their first win since August but Powell is confident it will come soon should performance continue to get better.

“It was a much improved performance against Mossley but it was just a shame about the result,” said Powell.

“It was really good to see some patterns of play developing alongside good levels of effort and commitment from the players.

“Obviously we are disappointed to be out of the trophy because it is such a prestigious and rewarding competition.

“It was always going to be difficult and Mossley took their chances at key moments in the game and got the win they needed. Good luck to them for the rest of the competition.”

As well as improvements on the pitch, Powell has continued to add further quality to his squad and hopes the new signings will make a difference.

Skelmersdale announced three new players this week, including Callum Mahoney, who re-joins the club for a reunion with former boss Powell.

“Mahoney has some experience at this level and is a pacey, strong forward with a real eye for goal so he will be a threat,” said Powell.

“I am expecting big things from him having worked with him for a short while at Burscough last year.

“Rob Bourne has a great pedigree coming through Bury FC academy and he captained the team while he was there.

“I’m looking forward to having his energy and passing quality at my expense to use in midfield as that is an asset for us”.

Skelmersdale return to league action this Saturday when they take on Ramsbottom in their next home fixture.
