New use plan for ex-Superbikes shop

-

A PROMINENT Southport town centre building will be put back into use – but will no longer be a shop.

Planning permission has been granted to convert the former Southport Superbikes shop into office space on the ground floor.

Following the construction of an first floor extension, three flats will be built above the shop.

The shop, in Eastbank Street, used to sell a range of bikes, parts and accessories but was closed down shortly after a buyout by Preston-based Bowkers in 2014.

The unit has remained vacant ever since, but now finally looks set to have a new use.

Sefton Council has granted permission for the conversion, though it is not known if a company has been lined up to move into the new space.

A planning officer’s report had recommended approving the proposal, arguing it would cause no harm to neighbours. It also stated as a motorbike shop is classed as a “non-town centre use’” converting it into offices “would not compromise the vitality and viability of the town centre”.

The report concludes: “The proposal is acceptable in principle and will not cause any harm to the living conditions of future occupiers or neighbouring properties and will not cause any harm in terms of highway safety and therefore complies with local and national policies.”
