Southport Visiter

Get it together at the avenue

-

AS a boy growing up in Churchtown in the 1950s and 1960s I regularly rode my bike to Haig Avenue to watch the Sandgrounders and enjoyed myself mostly.

I emigrated to the USA in the late 1960s, but I never forgot my roots.

I’ve always looked regularly at the league tables to see how “my team” was doing.

In the last 20 years or so this has been mostly with a sorry feeling.

The team has lurched from bad to worst, and even worse, with seemingly nobody having any idea what to do about it.

I remember those years when Morecambe and Fleetwood and all those others were toiling in the Lancashire Combination along with Southport Reserves and others.

And now Fleetwood is in the hunt to possibly be promoted to the Championship.

And even Accrington Stanley resurrected themselves.

Clearly these teams developed a management team who knew what they were doing, at the same time as the inept board in Southport had no idea what to do or how to do it.

I really hope that the new board management team is successful in hiring the football leaders they want.

I am watching from afar and really want to see success for Southport FC. But they’d better be quick. The team cant seem to be competitive even in National League North.

And I don’t want to find out where they could be relegated to next.

Come on guys, pull it together and get this football club back to respectability. I’m watching! Robin Dawe

DIFFERENT, QUIRKY

I RECENTLY walked down Chapel Street past the former BHS building, down Corporation Street and through the arcade and earlier in the week had coffee in the Hungry Monk.

It got me thinking what a great hotel it would make with its interesting architecture and town centre position.

I puzzled over parking, and the solution I think could work would be to use the multi storey in Tulketh Street for hotel guests with an enclosed high level moving pavement connecting directly into the hotel.

The building in Corporation Street opposite Old Christ Church, and now a sports shop, could be refurbished and returned to its original use as a public house.

The hotel could have direct access into the arcade for the existing shops, restaurants and bars etc and other premises could be utilised to give a spread of leisure facilities and multicultural eating places within walking distance under cover.

How different and quirky would that be! The council office would be better rehoused and the service yard etc closed off to prevent unsocial behaviour.

To me this makes more sense than demolishing parts of Marble Place, which is a relatively new building, to build a hotel.

If this came about I would definitely have a stay just for the experience, hope it happens!

SEND USED STAMPS

I AM appealing for used postage stamps which help me raise funds which I then donate to the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Recycling used postage stamps is such an easy way to raise money for the charity and I am always in need of all types of postage stamps, including British, Foreign and Christmas stamps.

If you are able to help I would be grateful if you could cut the stamps from their envelopes (leaving a 1cm margin around the stamp) and send them to the address below.
