Fans’ tributes as popular festival comic dies at 51
COMEDY fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to Sean Hughes.
The popular Irish comedian and actor died on Monday, aged 51.
The star was perhaps best known for his TV appearances on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, and having his own sitcom, Sean’s Show.
He was no stranger to Southport either, having appeared at Southport Comedy Festival for two years straight.
Both of his performances were completely sold out, and he definitely left a mark on the town.
Organisers of Southport Comedy Festival, Brendan Riley and Val Brady, said: “We are in shock. Sean was a lovely guy and a unique performer.
“Everybody loved him when he performed at the festival, he was so likeable and such good fun.”
For Val, in particular, his appearance at the festival meant a lot.
She added: “It is so sad. Being Irish, I was a big fan of Sean from an early age from his ‘Seany Show’ days. I was so happy when he came to play our festival three years ago, and returned the following year, it was great to meet a childhood hero.
“It is a sad day for comedy.”
But Sean was a man of many talents, as he was also an actor – he even played a short role as Pat Stanaway in ITV soap Coronation Street, in 2007.
