Draw was a big step forward

- BY EMMA SANDERS

SKELMERSDALE United had to settle for a 3-3 draw against Radcliffe Borough despite producing a pleasing performance.

Dave Powell’s side have now gone three games unbeaten in the league and have shown real progress since he took over as manager.

It was another good performance on Saturday but a late equaliser from Radcliffe denied all three points for Skem.

Powell admitted he was fairly pleased with the result though as a number of injuries made life difficult for Skem before and during the match.

“I thought in stages we played very well. I’m disappointed we went 1-0 down at half-time to be honest,” said Powell.

“We played well, had a few chances and then in the second-half the lads were first class. We showed some quality and moved the ball around well.

“There were three great goals from us too and I am just disappointed we leaked that late goal really because we were comfortable enough to see the game out.

“Those half errors were punished but it was another step forward though and we are three games unbeaten in the league now.

“It is especially pleasing given all of the injuries we have had. Every team does struggle with injuries so I am not making excuses but the togetherness of the squad is there for everybody to see.

“We are making small steps forward and I can’t ask any more of the players. There were a few new faces in the squad again and they played well.

“The players have had to play a little bit out of position too to cover for injuries. They are developing a really good understanding at the back.

“To have to make two changes from that back four in one game is disappointing so I am pleased really we were able to still get a point, even though we could have had three.”

Skelmersdale return to action on Saturday when they face Mossley at the Marine Travel Arena for their next league fixture.
