MP welcomes discounted fares as railcard extended to the age of 30
THOSE heading towards the age of 30 can now get discounted train fares for the first time.
The railcard, which will be available for people aged 26-30, could include a reduction in fares by up to one-third, according to Southport MP Damien Moore.
With rail prices expected to rise from January 2018, and with direct rail links to both Manchester and Liverpool, it is thought that the new scheme will be welcomed by local residents.
Damien Moore has praised the plans, claiming that the new scheme will ‘potentially save resi- dents hundreds of pounds’.
Commenting on the proposals, announced in Chancellor Phil Hammond’s Budget, Mr Moore said: “This welcomed announcement will mean many residents living in Southport will save 33 per cent of their rail fares, enabling them to keep more of their own money.
“The average price of a return ticket to Manchester is £16.50 and £6.60 to Liverpool (cheapest open returns), which means, if you’re a regular commuter for work, you could save £5.44 and £2.17 on your rail fare respec- tively, potentially saving hundreds of pounds throughout the year*.
“The new rail card will also be great for our tourist economy as it will encourage those who ordinarily don’t visit the town to make the journey, but we must do more to showcase Southport’s potential.”
