Exams net win over the Fishermen

IN the Handicap League of the Southport and Formby Quiz League, the closest match this week was Exams’ 34-33 defeat of Fishermen’s Rest.

Receiving 5, Exams led throughout but just held on at the end led by Nick Philpott 11 with John Ashcroft 12 leading for the “Fish”.

Led by Jack Gardner 17 and receiving 12, Ainsdale Sands were caught by Formby Sports by round five but finished the stronger to finish 44-42 ahead with Bill Hodgson 14, Gary Buxton 13 and Sheila Tickle 10 leading for the visitors.

Conceding 20, Wings took seven rounds to catch Formby Pavilion but won the last round to finish 49-46 ahead with good scoring from Tom Farley 16, Keith Mulhearn 14 and Dag Griffiths 12 with Margaret Coppleston­e 12 leading for the Formby side.

ExPats made good use of their 13 point start to defeat E Street Band 35-32 who were led by Dave Nickeas 15 and Alan Wright 13.

Starting off level and led by Geoff Wilde 20, Southport FC proved too strong for MPs with a 40-29 victory.

Conceding 15, Zetland took seven rounds to draw level with Dismounted but won the last 10-0 to finish 54-44 ahead with Mark Halton 21, his highest score ever, Harry Owen 14 and Paul Edwards 10 leading for Zetland with Frank Hansen 14 and Mike Williams 10 leading for the visitors.

Led by Richard Farbon and Steve McGinty, both 12, Quads defeated St Jeromes 33-25 despite a five point concession. Casablanca were comfortabl­e in their 62-40 defeat of Mixed Blues despite a 15 point concession with Ray Oakes 22 (including a full - house), Dave Dutton 16, Chris Sumner 13 and Bill Thomas 11 all scoring well.

In the Eddie Conway Cup - League Individual Cup, congratula­tions go to Dag Griffiths (Wings) on winning for a record seventh time.

Harry Owen (Zetland) was runner-up followed by Bob Parry (Wings) and Richard Farbon (Quads).
