Chad glad as Linnets on the up

- BY SAM CARROLL

BURSCOUGH took the spoils in Saturday’s relegation six pointer at Maine Road - but their momentum was checked by a late abandonment on Tuesday afternoon.

A Chad Whyte brace - which came on the back of Terry Cummings’ opener - gave the Linnets an important victory in Manchester last weekend, but with a heavy downfall of snow appearing earlier on in the week, their game with Ashton Athletic was unfortunately postponed.

Saturday’s victory has, though, taken a little pressure away from Dave Sutton’s men.

They now sit four places and four points outside the relegation zone, with Saturday’s opposition Maine Road occupying the final of four drop-slots.

After the postponement of the Ashton game, however, Burscough’s next opponents are Chris Herbert’s Runcorn Town side.

The Linnets are without a fixture this week - with one of their allocated free weekends coming into effect - meaning they will have enjoyed a two-week break before the visit of Town.

With Burscough notching their landmark 300th victory of all-time in the 2-1 win over Hanley Town at the beginning of February - plus a new stadium being in the works - the club can hopefully turn their attentions to a successful push up the table during the latter stages of the season.

After all, 2018 marks 15 years since Burscough lifted the FA Trophy at Wembley after a 2-1 win over Tamworth.

After the disappointment of last season’s relegation, players, staff and fans alike will be hoping the win over Maine Road can be a turning point for Sutton’s men as they look to improve upon their league standing and show signs of improvement ahead of next year.

With Whyte continuing to score goals - his brace took him to fifteen for the season - Burscough have a player capable of firing them to safety and beyond.
