THIEVES stole a safe after breaking in through the roof of one of Southport’s newest bars.

Money from the tills was also taken during the break-in at Peaky Blinders bar in Churchtown, which happened in the early hours of Monday morning. The thieves attempted to access the cash machine, on the Sunny Road side of the building, causing damage to an internal wall.

They are then believed to have fled the scene in a white Audi.

The bar, themed on the hit BBC show of the same name, only opened two weeks earlier and has proved a hit with residents. It is the third bar Peaky Blinders bar to be opened by businessmen Rob Swire and John Sinclair, who have another in Southport town centre and one in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police is carrying out CCTV and forensic enquiries and has appealed for anyone who may have information to come forward.

Detective Inspector Robbie Moss said: “This is an independent local business and the owner is understandably devastated that it has been targeted.

“It’s shameful that there are people who think it is acceptable to t destroy other people’s hard work and enterprise for their own gain and we are determined to bring those responsible before the courts.

“I would appeal to people who may have seen anything suspicious around Sunny Road in the early hours of Monday to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

‘‘ After the incident the offender would have been carrying the safe and they may also have been carrying metal bars to cause the damage inside the premises, so they would have been very noticeable to any passers-by.”
