Volunteers urged to join the Force

- BY PAUL EDWARDS

SOUTHPORT and Birkdale Sports Club’s annual ClubForce initiative, aka A Bridge Too Far, takes place this weekend when it is hoped that as many volunteers as possible representing all the sports played at Trafalgar Road will turn up to lend a hand in doing the work required to keep the Club looking in good shape.

The current event is an extension of NatWest’s long-running CricketForce initiative, which S&B has extended to fit a multisport format and Club chairman Tony Elwood has written to each of the sec- tions asking them to identify any work required.

ALL members are, therefore, urged to come down to help out with a whole range of ‘spring cleaning’ jobs, including painting, re-erecting the nets, fitting the covers and generally preparing for the coming summer season when both tennis and cricket will be in full swing. Bacon butties will be served to all volunteers.

Elwood is hopeful that the volunteers will be joined on Saturday by two Lancashire Thunder players who will be promoting their Kia Super League fixture on 22 July. However, this has yet to be confirmed by Lancashire officials.

All of this activity is taking place against the backdrop of some major refurbishment work at the Club, including extensions to the changing rooms, upgrading of the ladies and gents toilets and an extensive renovation of the Jack Walker Lounge. The Club will be holding an Open Day once this work is complete.
