Police van flips over in crash

APOLICE patrol van overturned after colliding with a taxi on a busy road in southport.

The incident took place on Sunday, March 25 at around 7pm at the junction of Portland Street and Cemetery Road.

Two police officers and a taxi driver were taken to Southport and Formby hospital.

One person was reported to have suffered a hip injury, another suffered back pain and the other experience­d whiplash.

Merseyside police, North West Ambulance Service and Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS) all attended the scene.

It is still unclear as to how the collision between the Ford Transit van and the Ford Mondeo taxi occurred.

An MFRS spokesman said: “Two fire engines attended this incident.

“On arrival, crew found two vehicles at the scene, one on its roof and the other on its wheels. Three individual­s were out of the vehicles.

“Firefighte­rs made the scene safe and used equipment to clear a spillage.

“MFRS were at the scene for around 30 minutes.”

Road closures were put in place while inquiries were conducted and the vehicles were recovered.

A police spokespers­on said on Monday: “Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision yesterday evening just after 7pm.

“The incident is reported to have happened between the junction of Portland Street and Cemetery Road, Southport when a police Ford Transit van and a Ford Mondeo taxi collided, causing the police vehicle to overturn.

“Road closures were put in place while inquiries were progressed and recovery of the vehicles took place.

“The two police officers and taxi driver attended hospital for whiplash and bruising injuries and were later discharged. “No arrests were made.”
