AROYAL Wedding street party is to be held in Southport – for the fifth time.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 19 on Crosby Road, in Birkdale, to coincide with the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The party is set to begin at 1pm. Partygoers can expect to see lots of bunting, flags and cake to pay tribute to the Royals in style.

Previous street parties there have attracted more than 800 people, as well as a appearance from the BBC’s Hairy Bikers.

Party organiser Jonathan Cunningham MBE, managing director of Southport firm Storm Consultancy, said: “I used to live on Crosby Road for nine years, and although I have recently moved to a different road in Birkdale, the royal street parties are going to continue.

“It started years ago and this is our fifth royal street party. Each year the parties get bigger and better.

“We are very passionate about the Royals and if we can celebrate at a community event, whilst raising money for charity, then why not?

“There has been response to far.”

Tables and bunting are provided, but people are asked to bring their own chairs, food and drinks.

Jonathan, 46, a father of three, has fond memories of street parties held in Formby as a child and wanted to give his children the opportunity to experience it.

He explained: “It all started after I wanted to let my children experience a street party as I have such fond memories of them.

“When I started to ask around, I found out that nowhere was offering them nearby and I decided I would organise one myself. It doesn’t happen very often and it’s a chance to make memories and get to know your neighbours.”

Leaflets are currently going out and organisers need to know who is attending to organise the guest list.

Tickets are £5 per adult, and children under 16 go free.

All funds raised will be donated to Southport Community First Responders, where Jonathan is the team leader.

The volunteers – trained by North West Ambulance Service – give first aid in serious incidents, and attend to four incidents each day on average.

It is hoped the money raised will be able to expand the team, which is currently made up of just three people.
