We come alive when we go behind - Powell

SKELMERSDALE United’s good form continued with a battling 1-1 draw at Colwyn Bay last weekend, moving them 11 points clear of the drop-zone with seven games remaining.

Skem went into the break a goal behind, but Phil Mooney’s equaliser ensured Dave Powell’s men have now taken eight points from their previous four games after their three-month search for a victory ended at the start of the month.

“I thought we weren’t quite at the races in the first-half,” manager Powell said.

“We were disjointed and weren’t keeping the ball well enough, and Colwyn Bay shaded it and deserved to go in with the lead.”

But the manager was delighted with the response of his players to keep their unbeaten sequence of March fixtures intact.

“Second-half we were different class again. We upped the intensity, got the ball moving quicker, worked harder off the ball and deserved the point if not all three.

“I’m made up with the lads. They showed a lot of good character again, they played with a lot of intensity and if we keep playing like that we’ll win more games before the end of the season.”

When asked if his side are motivated by conceding first - Powell’s men have taken five of their last eight points after going behind - the manager urged his players to deliver a complete performance in the coming weeks.

“It’s certainly not the gameplan to go behind,” Powell laughed. “But it does seem to focus the players’ minds.

“We’ve just got to try and play with the intensity we did in the second half for ninety minutes.

“Last weekend we were superb in the first half and a little bit off it in the second half”.

Skem travel to Ossett Albion this weekend.
