‘Fed up’ kids take on fouling

TWO “fed up” children have made their own dog fouling signs to encourage owners to keep streets clean.

Mika Hamilton and Lydia Marshall, both eight, decided to take action and make the signs after repeatedly walking past other dog owners’ mess near their houses.

The friends, from Ainsdale, made the signs last month and decided to post them around the area.

The laminated signs, which read “Pick up the poop” and “Stop poo from sicking to your shoe”, have been attached to fences, bins and trees so that they are visible to dog walkers.

The Kings Meadow Primary School pupils, who are in year three, also attached nappy bags to the signs in a further attempt to encourage dog walkers to pick up any mess left by their pets.

Iain Hamilton, Mika’s father, said: “In the area around our house, there is a lot of dog mess left on the roads.

“The children have picked up on that when they are out on their bikes or roller skates.

“After a walk one day, the girls went off for a few hours before presenting the signs they had created – it was all their idea.

“I am really impressed and proud of them in knowing the difference between right and wrong, and trying to encourage others to do the right thing.

“It comes to something when eight-year-old children are sick of the actions of adults – it’s quite embarrassing really.

“A lot of people want to have a pet, without taking on the responsibility.”
