TWO new bars have opened in Southport town centre. The Copper and Ivy opened in Lord Street on Thursday, with The Southport Tavern opening its doors in London Street the following day.

The Copper and Ivy is a quirky cafe and bar with a real tree inside.

It offers a wide range of cocktails, loose leaf tea, coffee and beer.

Owner Samantha Lee, from Southport, chose an unusual name for the venue – but for a good reason.

The 24-year-old explained: “The decor of the venue is very botanical and there are plants and ivy everywhere – and the tree is from my own back garden. There are also accents of copper throughout the premises.

“Before I knew it, the venue’s design sort of named itself.”

The building, which formerly housed Mr Pickwick’s, seats around 40-50 people and and is set to start serving food within a few weeks.

It is hoped the menu will be suitable for a wide range of customers - with gluten free and vegetarian options available. Copper and Ivy is open from Wednesday to Sunday from noon until midnight, but the hours are set to increase when it begins serving food.

Another venue has also opened in Southport town centre, in the building that was formerly known as The Albert Hotel.

The pub, which is now called the Southport Tavern, officially opened on Friday, April 13.

The refurbished venue is owned by Burning Night Group and was acquired for its new brand, Authentic Alehouses.

The Burning Night Group is also the company which owns the build- ing formerly belonging to The Sandgrounder in Lord Street.

Speaking when the company acquired the premises, Authentic Alehouses director Allan Harper said: “This is a great building and, as with all the sites we take on, we have a brilliant refurbishment planned.

“We are confident that this unit can become one of our flagship Authentic Alehouses sites, we have some exciting things in store.”

The pub has already received several five-star reviews on Facebook following the opening.

One customer, Alexandra Prior, said: “Awesome place! Great atmosatmos phere and all the Bar staff are really lovely... will recommended to anyone I speak with.

“Look forward to my next visit.”

Another customer, Dylan Charles Loxton, wrote: “Excellent place to sit down and have a nice refreshing pint after a day’s work.

“Probably one of the nicest pubs around Southport at the minute.”
