WITH the scheduled final home league game of the season for the First XV at Waterloo Road against Manchester Medics on Saturday cancelled, the 120 people booked in for the traditional Patrons Day pre-match lunch enjoyed a game of social Veterans rugby at its best.

Southport Shipwrecks hosted their touring counterparts Aldridge RFC from Birmingham on the main pitch in an entertaining encounter where the scoreline was irrelevant.

With the inspiration of occasional “Friday nights, under the lights” Shipwrecks rugby is an inspiration. This was a great success in showboating the concept.

Elsewhere the Second XV provided a good challenge to league leaders Penrith II, going down 26-52, whilst it was a familiar tale of woe for the Third XV with Wirral IV unable to raise a team.

A letter in last week- end’s Sunday Times pleads with the RFU not to ignore this. Southport is not immune and has struggled on occasion to get three teams out but sterling work by the likes of Jason Keating and Graham Whyte has turned things round.

But neighbours Firwood Waterloo have lost their second and third string for the season and this Saturday the thirds with no scheduled fixture are hoping to assist depleted Ormskirk by hosting a touring tram at Waterloo Road. However the seconds and

Tarleton II buck the trend in the fully fledged and tasty derby.

Well worth popping down to Waterloo Road for the 3pm kick offs, even more if the sun is shining in accordance with the forecast.

In fact get there even earlier as the u13s entertain Loughborough at 12.30pm to commence a full afternoon programme.

The First XV has two away fixtures left - the first of which is a trip over the water to Eastham to take on promotion hopefuls Anselmians this Saturday.

With a mid-table position secure the lads will be looking to finish the season on a high, whilst taking the opportunity to blood the youngsters.

The club’s adopted horse Gas Line Boy, co-owned by one of the Club Patrons, did himself proud in the Grand National completing the course in a very respectable 7th position.

Members are reminded that the AGM will be held this evening (Thursday 19th April) at 8.15pm in the clubhouse.
