and Andrews claiming the first 21-18.

It was a much tougher task for the Mawdesley/Victoria Hall pair, as Whittle and Coulthard managed to pull away to a 15-5 lead.

But as the pressure was mounting, Tolman and Andrews thrived on this predicament, and took the second set 21-18.

This included winning the last six points.

The match of the night went to the women’s singles, as Churchtown’s Eleanor Sinker edged a thrilling contest against Woodvale’s Tasha Johnson 15-21, 21-17, 21-19.

After winning last year’s C Tournament, Johnson was looking on course of matching the efforts of fellow Woodvale player Millie Hyde by winning all three singles titles in the league’s individual tournaments.

It was a strong start for Johnson, who claimed a number of consecutive points to gradually move ahead of their opponent to take the opener 21-15.

The beginning of the second set almost saw a similar pattern of points scoring from the previous set.

But then the tables were turned, and Sinker recovered well to create a gap of her own to take the second set 21-17.

The majority of the deciding set was tighter then you could possibly imagine.

But as Sinker took an 11-8 lead, Johnson pushed ahead in dramatic circumstances as she won the next seven points.

Then it was Sinker going on a streak of her own to take a narrow 18-17 lead.

In the end, it took two match points for Sinker to take the glory over Johnson in what was a final to remember.

It is usually a rare sight to see Tarleton make an appearance in the finals at these types of tournaments.

So it was an even bigger surprise to see Tarleton’s Ryan Lee and partner Lawrence Vander Hendon win the men’s doubles.

They overcame the test of the Southport/Woodvale pair of Paul Sykes and Ben Wilkie 21-20, 21-13.

After battling through the group and knockout stages, Lee and Vander Hendon came into the final with a six point handicap advantage against their higher-ranked opponents.

The opening set saw Sykes and Wilkie claw back the deficit.

But despite saving four set points in the process, Lee and Vander Hendon claimed the opening set 21-20.

Securing set number one carried their momentum straight into the start of the second set, as the Tarleton duo won the first four points.

Despite a valiant effort by Sykes and Wilkie, the gap was too much for them and Lee and Vander Hendon confirmed their straight sets win 21-13 in the second set.

There was more success for Mawdesley, as Ben Mahoney was crowned men’s singles champion. After coming out of nowhere earlier in the season to win the singles in the C Tournament, Mahoney made the most of a rather generous handicap advantage to comfortably see off Woodvale’s Paul Maguire 21-5, 21-9.

Maguire needed a strong start and multiple moments in the match of winning a large amount of consecutive points to even stand a chance of toppling the Mawdesley youngster.

In the end, Mahoney has made it a memorable season and will surely be aiming for glory in next season’s A Tournament to match the efforts of Woodvale’s Millie Hyde, who secured the women’s singles triple-crown last year.

That ends the 2017/18 season. But there is still one event that is essential for league members to attend.

There are a few tickets still available for the end of season awards night which takes place on May 4 at the Bold Hotel from 7pm. Check out the league’s Facebook page for the contact information.
