Devonshire caught high and dry by Fish

IN the Don Standing Cup quarterfin­als, the only upset this week was Fishermen’s Rest’s defeat of Devonshire Club.

They were never behind and finished 39-35 ahead led by good scoring from Dave Tarr 15 and John Ashcroft 13 with Bob Rimmer 11 and Dave Leyland 10 leading for the home side.

In the semi-final, they will meet the holders Casablanca.

They were only two points ahead of E Street Band after six rounds but finished the stronger to come out 45-39 winners with good scoring from Ray Oakes and Bill Thomas, both 14, and Dave Dutton 10 with Alan Wright 14 and Dave Twigge 10 leading for the Band.

Exams gave a good account of themselves against Formby Sports but eventually went down 46-37 with good scoring from Sheila Tickle 16, Keith Gowans 14 and Gary Buxton 10 with Steve James 12 and Dermot Williams 10 leading for the home side.

In the semi-final, they will meet Wings who eventually got the better of a much improved Southport FC, finishing 50-37 ahead led by Dag Griffiths 19, Keith Mulhearn 15 and Maurice Wright 10 with the redoubtabl­e Geoff Wilde 14 leading for the football club.

In the Maurice Jefferies Plate quarter-finals, good scoring from Ann Evans 16 and Chris Hodgen 16 underpinne­d MPs 38-32 victory at Formby Pavilion with Margaret Coppleston­e 13 and Frank Gracie 10 leading for the home side. Newcomers Dismounted advanced to the semi-finals with a hard - fought 42-40 victory at Ainsdale Sands.

Steve Watson 17 and Frank Hansen 15 scored well for the visitors and Jack Gardner 27 dominated for Sands.

Led by Richard Farbon 17 and Pat Duffet 12, Quads proved too strong for St Jeromes in winning 42-31 with Sue Ford 10 leading for the Formby side.
