Jennifer vies for town title

-

A YOUNG Southport woman is hoping to become an ambassador for her home town and country.

Jennifer Amy Leigh, who won the British Dyslexia Association Highly Commended Adult Award 2017, is set to compete in Miss Southport tomorrow and in the Miss England semi-final on July 3.

In the third heat of the Miss England competition, the 24-year-old won the judges’ vote and was named “top fundraiser” and “most photogenic” after competing against contestants from all over England.

The heat included a public vote and fundraising round and the judges selected Jennifer as one of only two winners to go forward to the next stage of the contest. She was given a tiara, two sashes, a £150 gift voucher and a place in the Miss England semi-final in Nottinghamshire.

In the semi-final, Jennifer will be invited to participate in an “eco fashion round” where contestants create an outfit made from recycled materials, as well as raising funds for the Miss World charity, Beauty With A Purpose.

Jennifer, who has recently graduated with an MA in politics from Manchester University, will be competing against about 70 contestants, with only 10 places up for grabs in the national final.

But if she wins Miss Southport, she will skip the semi-final and will be entered straight into the final of Miss England.

Jennifer said: “Entering Miss England has been such an incredible confidence boost.

“It has allowed me to embrace who I am, be proud of it and express my personality through design, fashion and make-up like in no other way.

“My participation has inspired me to get back into fundraising, this time for the charity Beauty With A Purpose, thus re-igniting a passion of mine and allowing me to help make positive change.

“I have had such an amazing journey so far and still have so much more to look forward to.

“I hope to win both contests and become an ambassador for both my hometown and country.”
