SOUTHPORT’S oldest florist has announced it is to close its Birkdale branch after 40 years of trading.

June The Florist, located on Liverpool Road, was established in 1978 and will officially close on Saturday, June 23.

However, the original June The Florist branch, on Lord Street, will remain open and all the Birkdale staff will be re-located to the town centre store.

The business was opened in 1925 by Bessie Eaton, and is one of Southport’s oldest family businesses, currently owned by Peter and Elizabeth Eaton.

Bessie was a famous figure in the town, who became a very popular Councillor and also Mayoress of Southport.

To spread the news of the closure, Peter and Elizabeth have put a notice up in their store window.

It says: “The Birkdale branch of June The Florist will be closing on Saturday, June 23, after 40 wonderful years of trading.

“We would like to thank our very loyal customers for all their support over many years, it is very much appreciated.

“We look forward to continue serving you at our Lord Street branch, Southport.”

Many residents have taken to social media to share how saddened they are by the news.

Local photographer, Angus Matheson, said: “We ordered our wedding flowers from here. We ordered our Mothers’ Day flowers from here and our birthday, anniversary and Christmas flowers from here. And, sadly, our funeral flowers from here.

“It is, indeed, the end of an era. Thank you, Peter and Liz for looking after us in happy and sad times over the years.”

Elle Elmo Ball added: “How sad - and such a great location for locals. [I] love the smells of the flowers when passing.”

Alexandra Lynch said: “What a shame.”

Di Jackson added: “It certainly is the end of an era, will be very much missed.” Explore historic Laxey Take the Visit classic resort Port Erin On a clear day, see ‘Seven Kingdoms’ from the summit station An included ‘ card Fully escorted by a friendly, experienced tour manager Four nights’ half-board hotel accommodation, return flights and transfers
