ASOUTHPORT charity set up to help sufferers of spinal injuries has been awarded a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services.

The Spinal Unit Action Group, which operates from a centre on Weld Road, Birkdale, was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

The charity was set up in 1973 and helps those who otherwise could not receive treatment elsewhere.

It was formed with the sole purpose of providing help and support at a time when it was most needed, in the immediate aftermath of an irrevocable life-changing event.

SUAG also provides assistance with travel and accommodation costs for relatives, runs a free weekly coffee bar for patients, relatives and staff and holds monthly social events at the Centre.

Julie Jones, honorary secretary of SUAG, said: “We were thrilled to bits when we found out. We’ve never sought recognition; we’ve just been happy to help people when they need it.

“It is nice when you do get that recognition. It means a lot to us.”

She added: “To receive such an accolade has been overwhelming and in the last few days we have received many congratulatory messages, many from ex-patients of the centre and their families.”

Many of the volunteers have been with the group since it first formed and they are seeking new members to assist their work.

The charity receives no government funding and, as such, must raise all of its own funding. Its centre has 10 permanent residents, as well as two spaces for those for are not yet ready to move to home care.

A celebratory garden party will be held at the centre at 2pm on July 1, with tickets costing £3 for adults and £1 for kids.
