Give Dickenson the ball and he’ll do the business says Rimmer

FLEETWOOD Hesketh recorded their second win in as many weekends on Saturday after edging past Newton-le-Willows.

Hesketh had won just one of their last eight completed matches before last week’s victory over Wigan, but their return to form continued at Sea Cop.

Captain Scott Rimmer won the toss and chose to bat first, but his side were floundering on 102-6.

Hesketh had lost wickets at regular intervals throughout the innings, but late resistance from Lee Rimmer (31) and top-scorer Gavin Dickenson (32) helped the hosts to 202 all out from just under 50 overs.

An early flurry of wickets from Daniel Murphy and Rimmer looked to have ended the contest early on, with Newton-le-Willows being reduced to 123-9.

A dogged partnership of 67 between unbeaten Thomas Gunshorn - who fired 73 from 122 balls - and last man Euan Tully dragged the visitors to 190, however, until Dickenson took his fourth and final wicket to curtail their resistance.

Rimmer believes the overseas all-rounder, whose 4-60 figures made him the stand-out candidate for man of the match, has made a huge difference to his side in recent weeks.

“With our bowling attack we’re always going to bowl sides out but we’ve struggled batting wise,” Rimmer commented after the win. “Andrew Watts has made a huge difference in the order, though. He’s made two big contributions in the last couple of weeks.

“Then you’ve got Gavin Dickenson. He has 12 wickets in the last two games. He’s coming into his own now.

“When you throw him the ball, he’s always going to take wickets. It’s unbelievable.

“He got an 8-for earlier in the season and a 7-for last weekend. When you’ve got someone who’s going to just clear up the tail, you’re always in with a shout of winning games.”
