Burglary ordeal has ‘taken the shine off’ couple’s engagement

-

A SOUTHPORT couple say they no longer feel safe in their own home after being burgled while they were sleeping.

Caroline and fiancé Aaron, of Cedar Street – who asked for their surnames to be withheld – were reportedly burgled during the night between August 13 and 14.

They woke to find that their Mercedes-Benz car and a Mulberry handbag had been stolen.

Caroline, 35, said: “We went to bed at 9.30pm, heard absolutely nothing in the night.

“We got up at 6.15, got ready for work and as we went to leave the house at 7am, I noticed my handbag wasn’t where I had left it.

“I asked my fiancé if he had remembered to lock the front door and he checked it and confirmed it was locked.

“As he looked out the window in the front door he noticed his car was gone. He ran through to our back door which was now unlocked.

“He noticed that the outside lock on the door had been snapped off.”

They immediately reported the crime to Merseyside police.

Caroline said that hours later, after activating the tracker on the car, she was informed by the police that it had been located at Aintree Hospital.

The crime left the couple, who have lived in the house for 18 months, “out of pocket” and feeling as though they are no longer safe in their own home.

Caroline added: “I feel really anxious in the house now which is such a shame as we love our home so much. I’m so anxious and frightened they may come back in the future. The locksmith we used said there have been a lot of similar burglaries in the area lately.”

She added: “We only got engaged last week and this has completely taken the shine off it all.”

A Merseyside police spokesperson said: “At around 7am on Tuesday, 14 August, a call was received reporting a burglary at an address in Cedar Street, believed to have happened overnight.

“A Mercedes was stolen from outside the address, and a handbag and purse was stolen from inside.

“The vehicle was fitted with a tracker and, following inquiries, was located in the Aintree area, before being recovered.”
